Fees

The public access clerks at 4 King’s Bench Walk will be happy to give you an indication of the likely range of fees for a particular type of case. For obvious reasons, they cannot give firm quotes or agree fees until they have seen all the relevant papers. The following list gives some general guidance as to the fees charged by barristers at 4 King’s Bench Walk in certain types of work. Please note however for each case the fee is assessed on an individual basis and is dependent on availability.


Employment tribunal trial lasting one day or less*

Fee at the lower end is for junior counsel, with a conference only on the day of the hearing and where the trial bundle does not exceed 150 pages. The higher end is for more senior counsel and covers a conference in Chambers prior to the day of the hearing.                                                       £1,250 to £3,000


County court hearing, listed to last up to half-a-day*

Fee depends on the complexity of the matter, the amount of pre-reading involved and the seniority of counsel. It does not cover a pre-hearing conference or advice.                                               £750 to £2,000


Opinion in writing*

Written advices and opinions are charged on a time basis. Hourly rate depends on the seniority of the barrister instructed.                                                                                                              £150 to £250 per hour


Drafting documents or advising in conference*

Charged on a time basis. Hourly rate depends on the seniority of the barrister instructed. Rates quoted are for barristers between 8 and 20 years call.                                                             £150 to £250 per hour



Professional misconduct hearing, one day*

Rate depends on the complexity of the issues and the evidence, seniority of the barrister and whether a conference in Chambers is required prior to the hearing.                                                     £1,250 to £3,000


*The above figures are quoted exclusive of VAT. VAT is payable on top at the normal rate of 17.5%. No extra charge is made for travel to a hearing before a court or tribunal within the M25. Travel outside the M25 is charged on the following basis and is also subject to VAT: travel time at half the appropriate hourly rate plus the cost of a first class return rail fare. Travel to conferences or site visits is charged on the same basis whether inside or outside the M25
